We are deeply saddened and shocked by the events that have been uncovered this week at Whorlton Hall. We are committed to ensuring people with autism and learning disabilities are supported out of ATU's and into the community.
For years, many people have endured years of hospitalisation or languished in secure settings that have failed to meet their needs and aspirations, keeping them isolated from the community and their families. Their independence, including access to education and employment and the right to live in the community has been denied for too long.
We have been working with NHS England since 2017 to offer community based support to many people leaving ATU's. We work alongside family and carers to ensure people get the right support in place, in their own home, in the community.
