Alex's journey to independence
Alex first started his support back in October 2015 when he didn’t engage in much outside of his home. Since then Alex has got involved with multiple projects which have helped him to increase his confidence, gain work experience, build his CV as well as move into his own flat!
First Routes has supported Alex to engage in many activities including creative writing through igniting Imaginations where he was paired with a professional writer who would mentor him and support him to start his creative writing. This has helped Alex put in writing a creative story he has developed in his mind for over a decade. Moving forward with his life now he is also completing a CISCO certified network associate course which was outside of his comfort zone but he has found a true interest in this and is working towards his qualification throughout 2016. Alex was still unsure what he wanted to do, First Routes then supported Alex to engage in the RHS accredited course; Grow to Sell at Beanstalks Gardens. During this course, he had not only made his own creative planter to sell but actually designed the product and made it from scratch out of recycled materials. Alex designed two herb planters which were sold at the Harlow Carr RHS show. As Alex progressed he developed a real interest in woodwork, design, and his creativity shone through. We are delighted to say that Alex has now started working with Top Notch over in Thorne where he can fully utilise his creativity and interest in woodwork. On his first session at Top Notch Alex astounded the team by drawing up 2 different designs and plans for a bespoke rabbit hutch.
Now Alex is now settled in his own flat, and is fully embracing living independently; From cooking new meals for himself to hosting evenings with friends, Alex really is gaining more confidence in himself and his own ability every day and we are delighted to be able to continue to support Alex as he moves closer to securing paid work.
